The Uzbeks are a people claiming Mongol descent but speaking a Turkic language. While some nomadic Uzbek groups remain in remote areas, most are now farmers or city dwellers. The majority live in Uzbekistan, but there are also significant populations in Afghanistan and refugee communities in Pakistan and Iran. Their Turkic language distinguishes them from the Tajiks, who are descendants of the indigenous Indo-European population and retain the Persian language.
