Suzani are intricately embroidered textiles, typically from Uzbekistan, created as dowry items. The term comes from the Persian word for "needle". These pieces feature flowing curvilinear motifs like sun and moon disks, flowers, vines, fruits, and occasionally birds or fish, stitched in silk or cotton thread on a cotton or silk background. Chain, buttonhole, and satin stitches are primarily used. While antique suzanis are highly valued, many exquisite examples are still being made today, each telling a unique story through its design and motifs.
