The word "bay" comes from Turkish and is often used to describe the color of a horse. It means dappled, speckled, or mottled. This same word is used in the carpet trade to talk about small changes in color within a single carpet. There are two reasons for these changes. The first is that early dyeing techniques were not very precise. This, combined with differences in yarn thickness, can cause slight color variations in a batch of yarn. These variations add depth and interest to the carpet. The second reason is when a new batch of yarn is started in the middle of a carpet. You can see a clear line where the old and new yarn meet.
